Chick Rescued after Mishap

11 Sep 2011

Chick Rescued after MishapssAn albatross chick had to be rescued from Otago Harbour today after a failed attempt at flying out to sea. The chick flew off just as the wind dropped and, not knowing how to stay in the air, crash-landed in the water. Royal Albatross Centre contacted Dept of Conservation and within an hour they had plucked the chick from the harbour, dried it off, tucked it into the front seat of the car and returned it to the headland. Two days later it happily recommenced its journey.

Many thanks to Peninsula locals David Taiaroa and Sarah Valk who spotted it and raised the alarm.
